The SEDucate plugin, developed as part of a project for the iEarth centre, is an initiative that aims to create tailored sedimentary log exercises by incorporating modern depositional environments. Recently published in the diamond open access Sedimentologika journal, the plugin provides an interactive learning platform for students, allowing them to explore and comprehend the subtle differences present in the vertical profiles of sedimentary logs. This active learning approach encourages students to actively engage with the material, resulting in a more effective educational experience.
With its current iteration, the SEDucate plugin supports a diverse range of 10 different environments, including alluvial fan, channel belt, floodplain, lacustrine, eolian, shoreface, deep marine, turbidites, delta mouthbar, and delta channel. Moreover, the plugin also allows users to create their own custom environments, providing flexibility and catering to a wider array of learning objectives. These educational resources have been thoughtfully developed in collaboration with students, aiming to enhance the teaching of sedimentary log characterization, paleogeographic interpretation, and the lateral variations observed in modern sedimentary environments.
