Teachers Retreat autumn 2018

From September 26th to 28th, 29 lecturers from UiB, UiO, UiT and UNIS was gathered for Teacher’s Retreat for the first time. Both scientific employees, PhD’s and students were present at Geilo.

Teachers Retreat, inspired by the model of bioCEED, is an iEarth initiative to create a place for geoscience teachers in higher education to meet and to share ideas, experiences and knowledge about teaching.

The head of department for geoscience from UiO, Brit Lisa Skjekvåle, and vice dean for education at the MatNat faculty at UiB, Harald Walderhaug, came to talk about the future geoscience education and institutional changes to improve the bachelor programs.

Other topics discussed were digital field teaching, writing practice, how to involve students in research, course evaluation, how and why to take use of our alumni network, and discussion around today’s geoscience curriculum.

I addition, Christian Jørgensen from Department of Biology, UiB, visited to give an inspiring talk about his own experiences with teaching and a workshop about writing practice.

There were also time for a hike in the snow to Hallingskarvet and bowling.

We are already looking forward for next year’s Teachers retreat!
